UI Designer
TIMELINE
2 Weeks (~25 hours)
TOOLS USED
Figma, FigJam, Adobe Illustrator
Background
Beli is an app for foodies to keep lists and maps of all restaurants they want to try and have been to. It allows users to rank these restaurants, rate them, leave reviews, see other people’s reviews, and receive personalized recommendations.
From my own experiences of using the app, I began to become demotivated because of some difficulties with using certain features and decided to explore how can the app be redesigned to increase user engagement.
Disclaimer: This is a self-published project, and in no ways associated to Beli professionally. The views from this case study are strictly my own. This case study isn’t exhaustive, as I didn’t have full access to the user data of the application.
Problem Discovery
User Feedback
I analyzed over 100 app store reviews to see what difficulties users were having. I wanted to not only focus on negative reviews but also on issues that were affecting loyal customers.
Synthesizing Findings
From here, I noticed that certain issues were associated with certain rating levels. I categorized them into highly satisfied users and unsatisfied users.
Ideation
User Journey Map
Based on the user stories I created as well as Beli’s existing user flow, I created a user journey map to identify areas for improvement.
Main Tasks & Challenges
Update UI to improve visual design and resolve inconsistencies across current UI.
Improve UX for to increase user interactions with existing underutilized features and add interaction patterns.
Add new functions to improve features and capabilities.
Wireframing
I first sketched out some wireframes which served as my general guide for the creating the layout of the app interface. I also used this to plan out some interactive buttons that I wanted to include in the prototype. This significantly streamlined the creation of digital wireframes.
Design
UI Inspiration
My goal for this was to create an interface that was playful and engaging while retaining Beli’s original branding. I decided to utilize clean and minimalist fonts, pairing them with visually interesting patterns and illustrations.
